Helen Stay Obituary

Wife of Jesse Eldred Stay

Helen Stay Obituary

Stay, Helen Lela Valantine, passed away peacefully at home on December 23, 2008. Helen was born on January 1, 1924 in Los Angeles to Ruby Potter and Vernon Wilson Valantine, the second of their five children. She is survived by all of her siblings, Lora Hawkins, Vernon (Ted), Roy and Saralyn Brunson. Helen was very bright and skipped several grades. She graduated from Los Angeles City College at the age of 18 where she was also Homecoming Queen. Helen married Jesse E. Stay on July 13, 1942. Together they raised seven children, Sharon Brown, Randall, Linda Danielson, Judi Moore, Laurence, Gregory and Timothy. Helen and Jesse have 50 grandchildren and 89 great grandchildren at this time. Helen earned a Masters of Library Science when her children were mostly grown. She loved reading and learning. Helen gave exemplary service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held leadership positions in all of the women's auxiliary organizations, served with Jesse when he was the Mission President in Rosario Argentina, and served as a Matron when Jesse was in the presidency of the Los Angeles Temple. As the wife of a military officer, Helen was often alone to raise her family. She showed remarkable flexibility and resiliency as the military took the family to ten different states and to Madrid, Spain in 14 moves. When Jesse retired the second time Helen's request was that they go home to Los Angeles. They moved to Huntington Beach in 1984 and have been surrounded by dear friends ever since. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all the caring friends and neighbors who have provided such loving service and showed unstinted kindness to our mother and father during the last years of their lives. A memorial service will be held January 3, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd, Westminster, CA with a viewing starting at 9:00 a.m.
