Charlotte Frost Train Woodbury

Wife of Jeremiah Woodbury after his wife, Elizabeth Bartlett Woodbury, died.

Charlotte Frost Train Woodbury

I remember seeing a picture of Charlotte Frost Train in my grandmother’s genealogy when I was young. She had her hair in braids. The quality of the picture was not very good. It made her look dark. I asked grandmother if we had Indians in our family. I thought that she would never stop laughing.

Charlotte was not of Indian descent, but until recently we knew very little about Charlotte except that she went west in 1847 in the same wagon train as Jeremiah Woodbury – the Abraham O. Smoot company – and that she married Jeremiah Woodbury after his wife Elizabeth Bartlett Woodbury died. They were married on 12 July 1852 in the Endowment House.

I recently found her birth in Washington, Berkshire, Massachusetts which about 30 miles west of Leverett where Jeremiah Woodbury was born, but over the Berkshire mountains . She was born Charlotte FROST 20 Mar 1798 to Apollos and Abigail (Loomis) FROST. TRAIN was the last name of her first husband – Parsons Train. They were married 15 Nov 1823 in West Springfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts which is south of Leverett. The marriage states that Parsons was from Hartford, Connecticut. In checking the IGI for TRAIN, I found a Phebe P. TRANE born 7 May 1830 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut to Parsons and Charlotte Trane. It is probably not true that she never had children. So what happened to her husband and children? How did she join the Church? How soon did she get to Nauvoo?

Charlotte and Jeremiah Woodbury were married for more than thirty years. Charlotte died 6 Oct 1883 in Salt Lake City. Jeremiah died two days later. Charlotte was a devoted wife and thoughtful step-mother to Jeremiah’s children. She was an answer to a promise given in Jeremiah’s patriarchal blessing given in 1851 after Elizabeth had died.
“The Lord pities thy lonely conditions & he will give thee a companion to comfort thine heart in thine old age & he will give you your former companion in due time & all your children which are now dead as well as the living”
Jeremiah was 61 when he married Charlotte and 92 when he died. Charlotte was a comfort to Jeremiah in his loneliness and old age and an asset to our family.
