This photograph depicts Joseph Stay sitting at the side of his home after the death of Sarah Jane. The original picture is in the Paula Vilburn collection. This collection passed through a number of hands and then found its way back to Paula who now shares it with the family. After this time, Joseph lived at the home of Mary Cornelia Woodbury Stay his daughter in law. A room was constructed off the rear of the home for him to live in and receive care.

This remarkable 157 year old find is a picture painted in England when Joseph Stay was 19 years old. The original in the Paula Vilburn collection is about 15" X 24". This is the picture used to identify the earliest picture of Joseph Stay. This picture was painted before photography was in general use. The picture is typical of the period which shows the facial features in good detail. The body of Joseph is what we today would call boiler plate.

Early picture thought to be Joseph Stay, we have three pictures taken during this period of his life. They all were taken about the time the family left England and arrived in Saint Louis. These three pictures do not appear to be the same as the early Daguerreotype photo.

    JOSEPH STAY'S FUNERAL
Will Take Place Thursday From the First Ward Meeting House.
The funeral of Joseph Stay, whose death was announced in last night's "News," will take place in the First ward meeting house on Thursday, the 8th inst., at 1:30 p.m. Friends of the family are invited. The remains may be viewed at the late residence, 738 Wellington avenue, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the day of the funeral
As there were some inaccuracies in last night's account of deceased, the following information furnished by Reigo Hawkins, a son-in-law, is cheerfully given space: Joseph Stay was 80 years, 9 months and 19 days old. He had been a resident of Utah since 1876 and had been paralyzed for 14 years, 8 years of which he had been utterly helpless. Nearly five years ago he buried his aged and faithful wife, shortly after celebrating their golden wedding. He was true and faithful to his covenants, a consistant Latter-day Saint, and a friend to the poor and needy, giving of his means liberally. He leaves four daughters, all of whom are faithful members of the Church. They are Mrs. Sarah J. Powell, Mrs. Charlotte E. Hawkins, Mrs. Louisa Woodbury, and Mrs. Rebecca Warburton. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Son of Peter STAY & Sarah MUSSEN.
