Cleveland, May 11, Jay D. Stay, veteran educator, died Thursday
night after writing a message to the Lincoln High School class of ‘06,
whose reunion he had planning to attend next Thursday. His age was
89.
Born in Fulton, N.Y. he was educated at New York normal schools
and Syracuse University. Mr. Stay taught in New York and New Orleans
schools before going to Yanlton, S.D., as superintendent of schools.
He came to this city as assistant superintendent of schools and
remained in that capacity for ten years. When Lincoln High School
was opened he voluntarily returned as a teacher. Mr. Stay taught
Latin and Greek and later English and general sciences at Lincoln from
1900 to 1926 when he retired.
He leaves two sons, Theron D. of Cleveland and Clarence D. of
Six Lakes, Michigan, and two daughters, the Misses Pauline and Helen Stay
of this city.
