Life in Utah Fifty Years Ago Orin N. Woodbury, a pioneer of 1847, was a descendant of William Woodbury, who came from England to America about 1630. The family settled in Massachusetts, where Orin was born Aug 10 1828, the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Bartlett Woodbury. Baptized in 1841, and removed to Nauvoo, Ill. In 1842, he came to Utah in A. O. Smoot's company, after arriving in Salt lake City. Sep 26, 1847, in the fall of 1857 he took part in the Echo Canyon expedition, serving in Lat smith's company, whom he accompanied in many of his daring adventure in the mountains in this campaign his daring adventures in the mountains in this campaign he was taken sick and contracted ailments from which he never fully recovered. In the year 1861 he again became a pioneer, being called to take his family and help colonize St. George His death, which he died of Blood poisoning, occurred Aug 24, 1890. Six of his grandsons and one granddaughter have already entered the service of the government, and a number of other expect to do so in the near future. [BACK] |
