Our Gallery of Pioneers

 This noble woman, born in Liverpool, Eng. Thought of Manx lineage, celebrated on Tuesday last, Jan. 28, the eighty-seven anniversary of her birth. She is a sister of the late Pres. George Q. and Angus M. Cannon, also of Pres. David H. Cannon of the St. George Temple;
 and a niece of the late Pres. John Taylor, whose wife, Leonora, was her father's sister. Baptized in Eng. And at the age of 8 years. She came to Nauvoo when 11 years old, and her mother having been buried at sea during the voyage, and her father having soon thereafter died, she was taken into the family of her Uncle and Aunt Taylor and with them came to Utah in 1847, being thus a pioneer of the first season in the valley. She became the wife of Orin N. Woodbury in 1853, and went with him in 1861 on the "Dixie Mission". Being thus a pioneer of St. George also, where she has resided ever since. She was one of the first to become actively engaged in the silk industry, and made a success of  it; as was the case also with bee culture.
 At the organization of the Primary association in southern, Utah in 1880 she was chosen one of the presidency. And in 1885 she was selected as Counselor in the Stake Relief Society
Presidency. Becoming Pres. In 1895 when she was honorably released on account of falling health. During all these years she was a devoted worker in the St. George Temple, which glorious labor she continued until recently; and in her labors on connection with the auxiliary associations she traveled thousands of miles by team over the roughest of roads, besides making  two trips to Mexico to visit her daughter. She is the mother of 10 children, eight of whom are living and her other living posterity include 73 grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren. She has always taken an important part in the progress of women, and has demonstrated the possession of qualities of leadership and administrative ability of the first order. She is a true mother in Israel, a ministering angel of comfort to the afflicted, and a wise and sympathetic counselor; wherefore she is beloved wherever she is know.
