Pearce Family Line - Research

Sarah Pearce Stay, wife of Joseph Stay came from Wooton-under-Edge, Kingswwood and surrounding villages in Wilts.  This line has been significantly extended through the efforts of a professional genealogist Trevor Burborough of Salt Lake City.

The notes include information about the Vick, Lewis, Osborne, Vizard and Pearce lines.  A major breakthrough was noted when it was found by Trevor that Hannah Tanner was in fact Hannah Lewis.  Tanner was her married name prior to her second marriage.

Research Report Dated 14 January 1986 by Trevor Ian Burborough A. G.

A search of the 1841 census of Kingswood, Glcstr. produced the entry for Charles and Mary Pearce as follows:

1841 Census Kingswood, Wilts., Eng.
    Charles Pearce - 60-cloth worker-no
     Mary      "        -55-                    -yes
    Charles    "        -30-                    -yes
    Sarah       "        -15-                    -yes
    Thomas    "        -10-                    -yes
     Charlotte "        -  6-                    -yes

Interestingly, the census gives the county as Wiltshire even though Kingswood is located in the heart of Gloucestershire.  Kingswood is a parish under the jurisdiction of Wiltshire.

This sam family did not appear in the 1851 census and therefore, his birthplace was not ascertained.

The Temple Index Bureau or TIB was then consulted producing excellent results.  The ancestry of Charles Pearce was established through the TIB as follows:

Charles Pearce son of William Pearce Jr. and Hannah Tanner born abt 1790 and married Mary Lacy 1810

William Pearce Jr. son of William Pearce and Anna Worlock born abt 1765

Further research is required along the above lines and great opportunities are available for further extension.

Research Report  10 Feb. 1986 Trevor Burborough

Charles Pearce

Previous work in the Temple Index Bureau had located Charles Pearce's parentage as William Pearce Jr. and Hannah Tanner.  The temple work was performed in 1887 by Joseph Stay, son-in-law to Charles Pearce.

A search of Kingswood, Gloucestershire church records, yielded a wealth of information concerning the Pearce family.  The baptism of Charles Pearce was eventually located as follows:

Charles son of William and Hannah Pearce baptized 5 Jan 1789

The brothers and sisters of Charles Pearce were summarily extracted from the Bishop's Transcripts of Kingswood and the family was constructed.

The above entry was confirmed when the marriage of William Pearce and Hannah Tanner was located at Kingswood:

William Pearce and Hannah Tanner married 30 Jan 1787

One of their children was given the not so common, name of Ambrose.  This unusual first name would provide assistance later during this research session to firm up ancestral links.

The family of William Pearce was not pursued at this time as it is felt that a search of the original parish registers would be most beneficial.  On the TIB card for Charles Pearce his father's name was recorded as William Pearce Jr. , suggesting that his father's name was also William.  Future research should readily bear this out.

The next step was to search for Hannah Tanner's baptism and one entry was located which may have been plausible as she was born in 1759.

Upon reading the extorted marriages from the parish registers of Kingswood a most relevant piece of information was obtained which had not been recorded on the above marriage entry in the Bishop's Transcripts:

William Pearce, pig killer, and Hannah Tanner w, married 30 Jan 1787

Hannah, a widow, had been previously married to a ________ Tanner.  A review of the burial register of Kingswood indicated that several Thomas Tanner entries occurred prior to Hannah's second marriage:

Thomas Tanner buried 5 Jan 1783
                                "      2 Oct 1781
                                "     22 Aug 1778

One of the Thomas' had been married to a Hannah and had two children by her born in Kingswood prior to his death.  His marriage to Hannah was also located in due time:

Thomas Tanner and Hannah Stoner married by license 14 May 1775

Now it was learned that Hannah's maiden name was Stoner.  A careful reading of the Kingswood registers did produce her baptism.

Anthony Stoner

The baptism of Hannah Stoner was located as follows:

Hannah dau of Ant (Anthony) and Martha Stoner Bapt. 1 Mar 1753

It must be remembered that William and Hannah Pearce had a child named Anthony, presumably, in honor of her father.  Another child, as was mentioned previously, was baptized Ambrose son of William ahd Hannah Pearce.  Future discoveries would locate Hannah Stoner's grandfather as Ambrose Lewis.

Brothers and sisters of Hannah were extracted from the Kingswood register and the marriage of Anthony Stoner and Martha was sought and eventually located:

Anthony Stoner of Gloucester and Martha Lewis Married 22 Feb 1747

What was learned from this marriage was Anthony's residence i.e. the large city of Gloucester.  Also Martha's name was determined as Lewis.  Interestingly, Anthony and Martha Stoner had named one of their children Ambrose Lewis Stoner.  This information provided further confirmation concerning Martha's maiden name _____ Lewis.  Secondly, the name of Ambrose appears once again.

Searching back into the Kingswood registers Martha's baptism was located:

Martha dau of Ambrose and Ann Lewis bapt. 2 June 1718

At last, the origin of the name Ambrose!

Ambrose Lewis

The brothers and sisters of Martha Lewis were extracted from the parish of Kingswood and eventually the marriage of Ambrose and his wife Ann was located:

Ambrose Lewis and Ann Oscurd (Osborne) married 18 Jan 1699

Although, the parish register transcripts said Oscurd, however, a reading of the Kingswood BT's showed her name as Osbourne.  The baptism of Ambrose Lewis was located at Kingswood:

Ambrose son of Ambrose Lewis bapt. 31 Dec 1678

The baptism of Ann Osborne was located in the neighboring parish of Wooton-uner-Edge:

Anne dau of William Osborne bapt. 12 Sept 1674

It was at this juncture that the remainder of this research session was directed toward extending the Lacey family.  A significant number of possibilities are currently available for extending the Stoner/Lewis/and Osborne families.

James Lacey

Once again information obtained from the TIB has led to substantial discoveries along this family.  On Mary Lacey's TIB card her parents were recorded as James and Mary Lacey and Mary's baptism was located at Wooton-under-Edge as follows:

Mary dau of James and Mary Lacey bapt 28 July 1790

Two other children born to James and Mary Lacey were located in Wooton-under-Edge.  However, a span of nine years appeared between them suggesting that the couple may have children in another parish.  Future research should locate these "other" baptisms.

James' marriage was located in Wooton-uner-Edge:

James Lacey of Wooton-under-Edge and Mary Vicks single by license

Apparently, James was widowed several years later and remarried in 1791:

James Lacey w. and Margaret Reynolds s. married 20 June 1791

The baptism of Mary Vick was located in Kingswood parish:

Mary dau of Jonathan Vick bapt. 7 Apr. 1763

It appears from the Kingswood register that Jonathan Vick had married three times since his wife's names were given as Margery, Mary and Joan.  Joan was the mother of Mary Vick.  It was at this point that research time had expired.

In conclusion then, this research session has produced 15 new pedigree names.  The parishes of Kingswood and Wooton-under-Edge have both been extracted via the "Controlled Name Extraction Program.

Research Report dated 6 March, 1986 Trevor Burborough

Significant progress was made during this session along the Stay family and future efforts promise exciting results with the extension of this family.

Initially, work resumed along that portion of your family which lived in southern Gloucestershire in and around Kingswood.

Johnathan Vick

Jonathan Vick had appeared in Kingswood in 1746 when he married his first wife Margery Eastmead.  Eventually, he married Joan _____ but the place of that marriage has not yet been determined.  A search was initiated into a substantial number of parishes about Kingswood but the marriage was not to be located.  Searching further afield should most probably produce this marriage.

Johnathan Vick's baptism was not located in Kingswood but found in the parish of King Stanley.  King Stanley is a small parish about 5 miles north of Kingswood.   The following entry was located:

Jonathan son of John Vick bapt. 28 Mar 1725

The baptisms of Jonathan's brothers and sisters were also located within the parish as was the marriage of John Vick:

John Vick and Judith Wood married 9 Sept. 1715

Pursuing the Vick family further, the baptism of John Vick was also located within King Stanley in time:

John son of James Vicke bapt. 31 July 1689

Also, the baptism of Judith Wood:

Judith Wood dau. of John Wood bapt. 13 Sept. 1689

Other siblings of John Vicke were also extracted from the King Stanley register.

The marriage of James Vicke was sought in King Stanley, but, unfortunately, was not celebrated there.  James Vicke's baptism was also not located in the parish and therefore, a search was initiated into the appropriate probate court for the area hoping to locate a will which would establish James Vicke's parentage.  Although several wills were located not appeared to be related to James Vicke.  At this point, attention was given to the Wood family a new name on the pedigree.

John Wood

The baptism of Judith Wood was located in 1689 just after her future husband's baptism. i.e. John Vicke.  As the baptismal registers for King Stanley were searched to extract the John Wood Family it was observed that there were two John Woods residing in the parish, apparently, contemporaries as they were both producing children at the same time.  Both had a child baptized within the same year and therefore, to determine which children belonged to who was rather impossible.  Possibly a will may be able to ferret out the confusion.  A search of the will indexes was not undertaken, however, during this research session but is strongly advised at some future time.  One John Wood was married within the parish of King Stanley, but again without more corroborative evidence the marriage could not be accepted as ancestral:

John Wood and Ann Gardner marr. 23 Sept 1688

It is entirely possible that the above couple are ancestral and it is hoped that a future reading of Wood/Gardner probates will resolve this problem.

The baptism of John Wood was sought however, and an entry was located:

John son of John Wood bapt. 13 May 1663
Judith dau of John Wood bapt. 10 Oct. 1666

Earlier searches produced the marriage of John Wood Sr.:

Now because John Wood Jr. had named his daughter Judith it was most probably in honor of his mother Judith and the above baptismal entry of John Wood Jr. was accepted as ancestral.

A search was made into the probate indexes for a will to identify Judith Cupman's parents but, nothing of any substance was located.  The IGI for Gloucestershire was also consulted in the hope that Judith Cupman's baptism would be located but again the record is silent.

In conclusion, this research session has been most successful with the production of six new pedigree names and twenty-five individual entries and ten marriage entries pertaining to the Stay family.

Research Report 29 April 1986  Trevor Burborough

Previous searches into the TIB (Temple Index Bureau) had located the data for William Pearce Jr.  the father of Charles Pearce.  This work was performed by the son-in-law of Charles Pearce, i.e. Joseph Stay.  Joseph Stay had recorded his father-in-law's father as William Pearce Jr. , implying there was a William Pearce sr.  Also work was performed for William Pearce Jr. with Joseph Pearce listed as the grandson.  This Joseph Pearce was most probably the brother of Sarah Jane Pearce who married Joseph Stay.  On the TIB card, William Pearce was recorded as their father and Anna Worlock was recorded as the mother.  Interestingly, the baptism of this Joseph Pearce has not yet been located, although a search of the parish registers post 1813 for Kingswood, not available at the Genealogical Library, should produce his baptism and the baptisms of other members of his family.

The baptism of Anna Worlock was sought in the IGI and was located:

Anna dau of Jn Worlock and Judith bapt. 16 June 1745 at Wotton-under Edge

The original entry was then located and extracted.  All Worlock entries were extracted from both the Gloucester and Wiltshire IGI.

Unfortunately, no other children for John and Judith Worlock were located and a search into neighboring parishes were not part of the "Controlled Name Extraction Program", may produce other children.  During this search, however, the marriage of John Wood and his wife Judith was located:

Jn Worlock and Judith Vick married 14 Feb 1742 at Wotton-under-Edge

The location of this marriage was most interesting because John Worlock had married Judith Vick, the sister of Jonathan Vick who in turn was the father of Mary Vick who had married James Lacey the wife of Charles Pearce.  The two families appear to have doubled back on each other making research efforts 2X as valuable.

The baptism of John Worlock was now sought.  The baptism of his wife Judith, daughter of John and Judith Wood had been located during the previous research session, i.e. 1 April 1720.  A thorough search into the Woton-under-Edge BT's produced the following:

Jn son of Rich Worlock and Mary his wife bapt. 27 Oct. 1722

The baptism of other brothers and sisters of John were also sought in the Wotton-under-Edge BT's but only one sister was located through the period 1700-1730

Mary dau of Sam'l Vizard and Dinah bapt. 13 April 1695

Other siblings to Mary were extracted from the baptismal register and it was hoped that the marriage of Samuel Vizard and Dinah _________ had occurred in Wotton but a search through the years 1670-1681 did not produce the marriage and it will now be necessary to search the surrounding parishes for those years.

It was also hoped that a reading of Vizard wills would locate the origins of Samuel Vizard but although several wills were located and read none were helpful.

Research Report 12 April 1988 Trevor Burborough

Efforts during this research session were directed towards the family group sheet of Charles Pearce and Mary Lacey.  This objective required lengthy searches but at the conclusion of the research the following information was located:

Charles Pearce and Mary Lacey married St. James, Bristol 22 Jan 1810

Joseph Stay and Sarah Pearce both full age, bachelor & spinster both residents of the hamlet of St. Michael, Peter Stay father, Charles Pearce,  Married St. Michael Gloucester 7 July 1846 witnesses, Charles Jones and Anna Pearce.

Death certificate index entry for Charles Pearce Bristol 1850 4th qtr XI 110.

LDS Branch Records, Bristol:

    Charles Pearce - Kingswood/Chalford - bapt 26 Mar 1848
    Mary Pearce    -        "              "               "               "
Joseph Pearce  -  Son of charles & Mary Pearce Born 9 Aug 1813 in St. Philip, Bristol bapt. 12 Jan 1849
        Emigrated
Confirmed in Bristol 21 Jan 1849
Ordained Teacher in Bristol 10 Sept 1849

Now it was hoped that a search of Kingswood and parishes within a five mile radius would yield the marriage of the children of Charles and Mary Pearce.  The following parishes were read for the above mentioned marriages through the period 1830-1844, Elderly, Berkley, Boxwell, Charfield, Cheltenham, Cremhall, Dursley, Horton, Horsley, Kingscote, Kingswood, Newington, Ulney, Owlpen, Ozlworth, Tortwerth, Stienchombe, Wickwar.  Unfortunately, not one marriage for children of Charles and Mary Pearce was located.  After 1837 the law was repealed which required marriages to be performed with the Church of England.  It is entirely possible that couples married at the Registers Office or by a non-conformist minister.

It is possible that a thorough (and rather lengthy) reading of the civil registration indexes to marriages for the registration indexes to marriages for the registration districts near Kingswood and Cheltenham and Bristol for the Pearce Children previously mentioned will eventually produce the marriages.  As has been discussed such a search would be lengthy just as the search was for the marriages of Pearces in parishes around Kingswood, previously undertaken.

Now a vital piece of information has been located during this research session.  The 1851 census for Kingswood produced a Charles Pearce born at Kingswood about 1788 according to his calculated age.  Up to this point we had accepted the Charles Pearce bapt 5 Jan 1789, Kingswood as ancestral.

The death certificate for Charles Pearce, it is hoped has been located in 1850, the year before the census.  The death certificate in conjunction with the full marriage entry for Charles Pearce may help to clarify his origins.

Secondly, while our agent is extracting information from the Glocester records it is possible he will also locate the baptisms of the first four or five children of Charles and Mary Pearce in Bristol, possibly St. Philip or St. James.

The Bristol church records were read through the period 1815-1851 Census for Bitton were both read with all hamlets but no pertinent Pearce entries were located.
